Notes for MARION CHRISTINA CAMP: Marion was born at Rasselas,PA, but was raised on Ford's Prarie, Centralia, Washington.Marion recalls the long trip from Pensylvannia to Washington bytrain in 1902. "It was a week of sleeping in their seats andcooking on a small, heating stove in the rear of the car. Theystayed one night in the Centralia Hotel and then walked to ournew home the next day. Both houses and the farm itself neededmuch work. The house was moved from against a hil to a locationnearer the road and then remodeled. Father was quite ingenious.He piped water down from the spring and we had running waterwhen most people didn't. We didn't have electricty and my job onSunday was to clean the lamp chimneys." She attended CentralCollege of Washington and was a school teacher for the firstyear of her marriage. In those days married women were notallowed to teach. She belonged to the Presbyterian Churchwhere she met William Oliver at a social event. The church wasthe center of the family activities; Marion played the piano andorgan, taught Sunday School, was active in Women's Associationand served as a Deaconess and Elder. She was a member of theCreative Reading Club, PEO Sisterhood, and a charter member ofthe Mary Lacy chapter of DAR. Notes for WILLIAM HUGH OLIVER:William grew up on the family farm in Pleasant Mound, MI. Hereceived a BA degree from Parker College, MN. He managed ahardware store in Escanaba, MI. Looking to get away from theharsh winters he set forth westward looking for a hardware storeto buy. He ended up in Centrailia, Washington where heeventually bought House of Keir and renamed it Oliver Hardware.Will met his future bride, Marion Christina Camp, at a churchsocial. She had grown up on Ford's Prairie and was working as aschool teacher. They were married Sep. 7, 1915. Their first homewas an apartment above the hardware store. Later Will built theRock Street Apartments and a home for his family next door.Will moved his parents from MI in 1920. Three of Will's brothersalso came west. Frank established Oliver Hardware in Sonora, CA;Burton died as a result of war injuries (WW I); Claud settled inCentrailia, WA. A fourth brother Earl took over the famillyfarm.
