Notes for SILAS B. CAMP: Was listed in the 1850 Census forBradford County, PA as 5 years old and living with father AlbertG. Camp. Was listed in census of 1870 in Independence, JasperCo., Iowa. Marriage records in Bradford County, PA show SilasB. Camp married Iva Purdy on 25 Aug 1868. He was listed as fromNewton, Jasper Co., Iowa. When the Camp family arrived inGeneva in 1874, Silas and his two brothers started a grocerystore. Silas taught music in Beatrice, NE in 1873-1874. As soonas the fairgrounds were built, the famous "Silas Camp Band" wasformed. At one time there were three bands in Geneva and Silaswas the director of all three. He started an all-girl band about1900. For many years the Camp band was a feature in thecelebrations of Geneva; eleven Camp members played in the band.He was the Notary Republic for Geneva and his name appears onmany legal documents. The following test is from the AndreasHistory of the State of Nebraska: " S. B. CAMP was born inBradford County, Penn., in February, 1845; lived there untiltwenty years of age, when he moved to Lee County, Ill.,remaining one year, going to Jasper County, Iowa, where he livedthree years; then returned to Pennsylvania, where he followedfarming and teaching band music one and one-half years, thenreturned to Jasper County, Iowa, where he followed farming andstock-raising for two years. In December, 1870, removed toFillmore County. Neb., taking a homestead four miles south andsix east of Geneva, where he has farmed since. In the fall of1873, taught band music in Beatrice, Neb., and then went toIowa, returning in the fall of 1874, when he went into themercantile business in Fairmont; but, after a few months,removed his stock to Geneva; name of the firm, A. G. Camp &Sons. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace elected inthe county, before the county was organized into precincts. Hasbeen Treasurer of the School District, No. 75, for the last fiveyears, until last year he was a member of the Town Board. InNovember, 1879, he was elected Clerk of the District Court forfour years. Was Postmaster immediately after removing to Geneva.He was married, in 1868, in Pennsylvania, to Ida Purdy. Theyhave three children--Addie May, Carl Alvey and Ernst O." Inthe 1880 Census it shows: Silas 35ys Born in PA Ida33 Born in NY A. In researching records at the Fillmore Co.Courthouse in Geneva, NE in May 1997, we found that Silas ownedthe following property: Section 30, Township 6, Quarter 1(30-6-1) 22 6 3 (22-6-3) Children of SILAS CAMP and IVA PURDYare: i.
