Notes for Harold David (Spouse 1)
Notes for HAROLD DAVID CAMP: Interview with Harold at CampFamily Reunion at Estes Park, CO., on July 21, 2001. TammyOttmer and Marjorie Thompson. E-mail: ottmer@earthlink.net andjmtsparks@aol.com In 1935, Camp boys Melvin, Lloyd and Johnbought a Dodge coupe and they went from Platteville to L.A. CA.area. Break in speed on the Dodge was 35 MPH for the 1st 1000miles. (Except when Lloyd was asleep) Went to visit relativesGeorge and Rilla Thompson formerly Camp, as well as Cecil andElla Thompson formerly Fields, and George and Bessie Thompsonformerly Cedonia. According to Melvin they were digging behindsomeone's house and thought they had been caught by three menwho turned out to be relatives. Mother, Lucy was very strict, very Roman Catholic, and with 6 children had difficultymanaging the house. All the children went to Sunday School,Catechism and Confirmation. From birth to 1941 had milkroutes, the 2 boys Melvin and Lloyd hauled milk in 10 gal jugsfrom 6 A.M. to noon. They also took care of trucks, odd jobs, hauling anything unrestricted by permit in order to maximize useof gravel, coal, furniture. Permit had a proviso for transportfor 10 mile radius for pick up and delivery. Coal and wood bothhauled. The gravel business never really gelled as there wastoo much competition. In 1941 Dad sold milk routes and wentinto farming. Reason he sold the route was he didn't wantanother son to be ruined by driving the truck. It was so roughriding, it physically hurt them. He devoted more time to farmingand ranching with 80 head of brood cows. (breeders) and 4bulls. He kept mostly female calves and sold off the males. All 3 brothers Melvin, Lloyd, and John were 4F and not inductedinto the military. But I was. Eldest Sister, Mary was marriedin 1939 to Arthur Mitchell. Children Patty, Freddie, Betty Lou,Johnnie. Younger sister Louise was teaching school, neitherwent in to the service. Louise was teaching in Flagler andmarried Dale. I met Lois at a dance which was held in Millikenon a Sat night on the second floor over the pool hall. Lois wasat the dance with a friend of mine. The group just startedconversing and dancing, but I didn't even dance with her. Therewas no immediate attraction. One Sat. I needed a date so badlythat I drove to Milliken, but Lois was in Greeley. I met herMother Essie Polley who immediately approved of me. Essieagreed that Lois would go to the date with me. Lois came homeand doesn't recognize her Mother's description of me, but sheknew it was one of 4 guys, because they always exchanged names.Lois went next door and called and decided to go in a 1947Buick with George and Mary, cousins, we went to Lakeside todance. Had a good time, so there were more dances.
