Notes for ERNEST LEROY OTTMER: Ernest was born in Thorndale, TXon January 15, 1920. He was named after his uncle, E. L.Moseley. In Texas he was know as "Lit" but in Colorado he wascalled "Ott". He attended and graduated from Thorndale PublicSchools. While attending the school, a tornado hit the buildingand removed the top (3rd) story. The school was then remodelledto two floors. He was known for getting into fights (andwinning) and playing football very well. Upon graduation heenlisted in the U.S. Army when the WWII broke out. He wasassigned as an MP in Denver (Buckey Field) where he met andmarried Florence. He was later transferred to Marrietta, GAwhere he was trained on the B-29 aircraft. He was sent overseaswhere they flew missions from India into China. Later he wastransferred to Tinian Island as part of the B-29 teams to dropAtom bombs on Japan. After the war he worked for and retiredfrom the U.S. Post Office. He and Florence had three children:James, Paul, and Judy. After retirement, he was diagnosed withhigh altitude illness in Salida and was told to move to a loweraltitude. They moved to Longmont which was about 2000 feet lowerand lived there for 15 years. Later they moved to Temple, TX toagain get to a lower altitude. He was on oxygen at night formost of his retired life. Religion: Episcopalian. He and James(son) took training in Episcopal Church in Salida and wereconfirmed together. Hobbies: Collected stamps while working atthe Post Office. During retirement, he collected old coins.Stories: There was the time it snowed about 4 feet deep inSalida. Ernest heard the roof begin to creak so he and Jim (son)got on the roof to shovel the snow off before the roof caved in.Ernest tied a rope between he and Jim to keep them from fallingoff the roof; each worked a different side of the roof. Ernestslipped and started for the edge of the roof. Many neighbors hadgathered to watch this event. As he fell off the roof, they allyelled, "Pick a soft spot." He went head first into a driftabout 6' deep. Jim being tied to the other end of the rope camezipping over the roof peak, went airborne and landed in the snownear the crowd. They held up their hands showing fingers torepresent a grade for effort in Olympic style. There was thetime Ernest wanted to trim the big cottonwood trees in his frontyard. He climbed up and tied a rope around the part he wanted tocut out and had Jim hold the other end of the rope. As he sawedthe tree, he told Jim to tighten the rope to keep the tree fromhitting the house. When the tree began to fall, Jim pulled hardon the rope but the tree fell where it wanted. The tree missedthe house but drug Jim about 20 yards on his face. Did I mentionthat this was also Sr. Prom night...the makeup applied by hismother did not hide the abrasions. Notes for FLORENCE ELLA CAMP: Florence was born in Salida, CO onJanuary 24, 1922. She was baptized and confirmed in theAscension Episcopal Church in Salida, Many of her friends calledher Flo. She attended and graduated from the Salida schoolsystem. She attended nursing school at Denver General Hospitalin Denver, CO where she met and married Ernest Ottmer who was inthe U.S. Army and stationed at Buckley Field in Denver. She hadthree children: James, Paul, and Judy. She worked in thekitchen of the Longfellow Elementary school in Salida as a cook.She later worked as a secretary and accountant for Tire Town inSalida. They moved to Longmont for Ernest's health and later toTemple, TX for same reason. Religion: Episcopalian Hobbies:Working crossword puzzles and cooking Stories: When Florencewas pregnant with Jim, she and her brother, Otis Jr. wenteverywhere together. Once they went to the movies. The seatswere the type that automatically folded up when not in use. Inthe dark she tried to sit down but the seat was folded up. Shewent to the floor and then could not get up because she was solarge(pregnant). She and Jr. then got to laughing so loudly thatthey were asked to leave the theater. She and her sister(Ethel) Lorene frequently got into interesting situations. Oncethey were using an outhouse only to find a porcupine inside.Both came running out with underwear around their ankles.Another time, they became locked in a restroom in a gas stationand could not get out; they climbed through the window. Theyboth would get the giggles and then could not accomplishanything. They were taking a tour of the State Prison in CanonCity, CO. They were talking and giggling and the tour took aturn but they did not. They kept talking and walking. Soon theynoticed that there was no one around them. Soon they heardwhistles and bells. Lorene said that she wondered if someone hadgotten loose. Actually the guards were looking for them. Theydid eventually get back with the tour. One Thanksgiving dinnershe served brown mashed potatoes. When questioned, she statedthat she accidently used the chocolate milk instead of theregular milk in the potatoes. To further her explanation, sheproceeded to demonstrate using a ketchup bottle which had nocap--her plate became filled with ketchup.
