Notes for Eliza COLLINS
From A. O. Collin's book "The Story of Moses Collins 1785-1858 and His Descendants" published in 1974 by Biography Press,Aransas Pass, Texas. Dr. Collins lived in Houston but died several years ago. "Eliza Collins, seventh child, oldest daughter of Elizabeth and Moses Collins, was born on 15 Feb1820 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. At the age of fourteen, shse married Ira Malcolm Camp in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on 15 May1834 (the Family Bible gives the day as 12 May), the ceremony being performed by T. W. Cox, minister of the gospel. (1) Ira Malcollm Camp was born in Hancock County, Georgia, on 1 July1811, the son of Mary Williams and Cecellius Camp.(2) Moses Collins, father of Eliz Collins Camp, deeded certain land inTuscaloosa County, Alabama to Ira M. Camp on 29 Dec 1835, (3)which was just before Moses Collins left Alabama to go to Mississippi. On 29 June 1838 a deed is recorded for the transfer of a slave from Ira M. Camp to William Van Wyck in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. (4) By the time that Moses COllins began his settlement of the town of New Albany, Mississippi, his son-in-law had also moved there for Ira M. Camp acted as Surveyor and assisted Moses Collins, his father-in-law, in dividing the town into lots. (5) One of the main streets in NewAlbany is named Camp Avenue, undoubtedly named for Ira M. Camp. The first land sale record after the town of New Albany was established is dated 3 November 1840 with Ira and Eliza Camp deeding fourteen lots in New Albany to W. M. Duncan for a totalof $150. Notes for Ira Malcom (Spouse 1)
The 1840 Federal Census for Tippah County, Northern District, lists Ira M. Camp between his father-in-law, Moses Collins, and Booker Foster, who was one of the early founders of New Albany. The complete listing for the I. M. Camp family indicates that more than his immediate family was living with him at that time:
I.M. Camp Males under 5 2
Males 10—15 1
Males 20—30 2
Females 15—20 1
Male slaves 1
Female slaves 2
According to the obituary of Eliza Camp, Eliza and Ira Camp went into the organization of the Baptist Church at New Albany In 1841 and Ira Camp donated four acres of land for a building lot. The date Is probably erroneous, for New Albany Baptist Church was organized in 1843 rather than 184l.
On 5 Oct 1842 Ira M. Camp was appointed postmaster at New Albany, succeeding his brother-in-law, Irvin R. Collins, who had been postmaster since the office opened on 9 August 1841.
Ira camp Is listed as a messenger from the New Albany Baptist Church to the Chickasaw Baptist Association meeting at Aberdeen, Miss, on 7 Sept 1864.10 Another early record is the sale of 150 acres of land by Ira M. and Eliza Camp of Pontotoc County, Mississippi to David Pannel of the same county for the sum of $250, dated 20 Sept 1844.
While Ira and Eliza Camp were living in Mississippi, three of their children died and are buried there, though their grave sites are unknown. In 1846 Ira and Eliza Camp left Mississippi and moved to the area of Anderson, in Grimes County, Texas and began to acquire property.
In the Federal Census for Crimes County, Texas for 1850, Ira M. Camp is listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $2500 and he was living In Dwelling 191. The complete family group as shown
—284—
in the 1850 census for Grimes County, Texas is as follows :12
Ira M. Camp 39 M Born in Ga.

Ira M. Camp "of Grimes County, Texas" is shown Is Tippah County Mississippi records as deeding 320 acres of land on 9 Feb 1852 to E. T. Carlisle for $140. 22 July 1852, John Waldrop Camp, one of the children of Ira Camp, died and this child is buried in the Camp Cemetery near Navasota, Texas, probably the first burial there.
About 1852 Ira Camp bought an entire league of land on the Anderson road, just east of Navasota, and started building a large rock house. According to an old Navasota newspaper, Ira Camp used stone for the house taken from his own fields and the lime used in cementing the rocks together was burned out of the limestone on the place. It took two years of work for this house to be completed.
The Ira M. Camp house stood on a high hill over looking the town of Navasota. The building was two and a half stories high with the two lower stories containing thirteen rooms with plastered walls. There was a large cellar beneath the building and the entrance was through a trap door which was kept covered by a large rug. Ira Camp kept bees in the half story and had provided little passageways in the wall for their convenience. Imported from Italy the bees were of a special fine quality. Because they produced such excellent honey, they contributed to the support of the Camp establishment. The house contained unusually large stone chimneys and fireplaces which were able to accommodate four long logs at a time. Wide hallways on the first and second floors provided necessary ventilation in the hot summer, and on the first floor the customary parlor was on the left side of the hall.
Because it was situated on the old road between Huntsville and Old Washington both important early Texas towns, Ira Camp transformed his home into a combination stage coach depot and inn. Washington was the early capital of the old republic and Huntsville was the home of President Sam Houston. Camp Inn was known nationally as a stage coach inn affording the traveler genuine hospitality and the very best in food and comfort. In those days the area was so thickly wooded that deer, bear, turkey and quail were in plentiful supply. Chickens were too commonplace for guests, so quail were herded by droves into pens and served as regular fare at the inn. Wild hogs roamed the countryside so they were baited with corn, caught and slaughtered, as many as 25 to 50 at a time, to provide meat for the Camp larder. In addition to the fare of wild animals, Ira Camp owned hundreds of sheep and goats which made the meat supply even more varied.
Though slaves did most of the work, making candles, shoes, clothing, etc. and taking care of the Camp household, family and guests, a unique labor saving device at the inn was an eight—gallon dog churn. Operated by an unusually smart dog, it was attached to a treadmill on which the dog would trot. Seemingly enjoying his work as he raced to nowhere.
Because the inn provided a welcome break in his journey, Sam Houston often frequented the inn, He and Ira Camp were good friends and they often went on hunts together. Evidently Sam Houston stayed at the Camp Inn in 1860 when he made a speech at Navasota against disunion. Before her death in 1937, Mrs. W. H. Brown, the last surviving child of Ira M. Camp, told of impressions of her child hood and the stories she had heard from her parents. She recalled: "I don't remember the general, but I have often heard my mother and father speak of him. He always wore a blanket wrapped around his shoulders when he traveled, and he seemed to prefer loud blankets, Mexican or Indian blankets, with red and green stripes. He and my father were close friends."
The Camp Inn stood for many years, but the 1900 storm took the roof from the building. Today it is but a heap of ruins alongside State Highway 90 about two miles northeast of Navasota.
The 1860 Federal Census for the Western district, Hollendale post office, Grimes County, Texas, lists Ira Camp as Family 158, a farmer, with real estate and personal property valued at a total of $42,175. The family listing is:
Ira M. Camp 49 M Born in Ga.
Eliza 40 F Ala.
Irettie 13 F Miss.
Josephine 11 F Texas
Collins 10 M Texas
William 5 M Texas
Benjamin G. 3 M Texas
When the Civil War Came, General Bedford Forrest brought his mother to Camp Inn as a refuge. Navasota was then an outpost and there was little danger of the Union Army getting that far. She stayed with the Ira Camp family during the war and was accepted as a member of the family. Formerly Mrs. Miriam Beck Forrest, her name was then Mrs. Joseph Luxton, and she died while living with the Camp family. She is buried in the old Camp Cemetery near Navasota and in 1924 the Hannibal Boone Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy erected a large granite monument over her grave According to reports, Mrs. Luxton died of tetanus after sticking a nail in her foot The monument is declared to be the first monument erected in Grimes County and bears the following inscription:
"In memory of Mrs. Joseph Luxton nee Mrs. Miriam Beck Forrest Mother of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest Confederate States Army erected by Hannibal Boone Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy No. 523 Navasota, Texas"
During the yellow fever epidemic that swept the country in 1867 no one living at the Camp Inn suffered from the disease, although thirty visitors were present at the time. The Camp family would stand on top of the hill at the inn and watch the funeral processions in Navasota. Every day Ira Camp would take the papers and mail that was brought in by stagecoach and spread them out on the grass during the night for the dew to fall on them before he would allow anyone to touch them. He thought that the dew would kill the yellow fever germs.
An attempt was made to locate Navasota proper on the Camp properties in the south end-of the settlement, but a Mr. Nolan, who owned land in the north end, offered more agreeable terms and thus the town of Navasota was built where it is today. Camp Add- ition and Camp Subdivision were sold to white settlers but a part of the town which Ira Camp named Canaan was sold to freed men and became Freedman- town. Ira Camp also gave the site on which the present Navasota Junior High School stands, the building being built on this site about 1875.
Ira Camp built the first rock building in Navasota in 1865 near the central railroad at a cost o $8,000. He actually was the projector of the I & G N Railroad, for he felt that if Navasota was to attain growth and prominence, it must tap the pine forests to the east and obtain the cotton from Washington County and the Brazos bottom. He planned a railroad which would enable Navasota to do just that. Eventually he envisioned a railroad which would extend to the Red River and on west to the Pacific Ocean. Ira Camp employed a surveyor and out of his own pocket arranged with the state for convict labor to build a road bed for the railroad In the meantime he tried desperately to get backers for his project and spent about $5,000 of this own money in the effort. Later a company was organized for construction of a railway, but the route was changed so that the main line should pass east of Navasota. The line known as the Brazos Branch was surveyed and Ira Camp began work on it. About five miles of surveying, grading, excavation and embankment was completed ready for the laying of rails when the project was abandoned and the 'International Railway" which had become the International and Great Northern, passed out of Navasota's history. Part of this old embankment can still be seen, a dump which extends about seven miles from just east of Navasota northeastward in the direction of Anderson, a monument to the enterprise and energy of Ira M Camp.
Another idea of Ira M.Camp was that of perpetual motion, upon which he expended much thought, energy and money. Also, he envisioned the cultivation of the castor bean profitably, and on both of these projects he spent large sums of money. Though many of his plans and enterprises fell he was undaunted and would always turn determination toward new ventures.
One of Ira Camp's major interests was his church work. He had been ordained a deacon soon after his marriage and had been active in Baptist affairs in Mississippi before moving to Texas. The history of the Anderson Baptist Church, formerly called the Antioch Baptist Church, in Grimes County, Texas, records that when the congregation was struggling toward building their stone building in 1855, one of the members, Ira M. Camp, came to the rescue, advancing the money until the church could be in a position to repay.
The Texas Baptist State Convention was organized at Anderson (Antioch) Baptist Church on 8 Sept 1848. At this time there were only 34 Baptist churches in the state and 23 of them were represented in this organizational meeting. Among the messengers who took part in this historic occasion was Ira M. Camp.
Other churches in Grimes County were aided by Ira Camp's generosity. Bedias Baptist Church lists Ira M. Camp as clerk of that church at one time, but the date of his membership there is not known. In the minutes of the Anderson Baptist Church for April of 1848 the church authorized Anderson Buffington and Ira Malcolm Camp the privilege of receiving members into the Anderson church in services held in the Groce-Retreat neighborhood in the southern portion of the county, such services to be held in the Muldrew meetinghouse. Later Anderson Buffington and Ira M. Camp reported in March of 1849 that they had led in the constituting of a church in the Muldrew meetinghouse.
The Navasota Baptist Church was organized in January of 1860 with six members, one of whom was Ira M. Camp (though his name is spelled incorrectly on the records as Ira M. Crump), and Ira Camp was recognized as a deacon. Joseph E. Boulet, in describing Ira Camp as a faithful deacon of the Navasota Church, says:
He was a very liberal giver and always contributed to all the work of the church. He was a great friend and supporter of Buckner Orphans' Home. Among his other helpful acts he at one time advanced the money with which to purchase an organ for the church, and the instrument was secured; but there was so much sentiment against the use of an organ in the services that it was used only during Sunday School and was locked up during the preaching hour.
Ira Malcolm Camp was a Mason, having been a member of the Orphans' Friend Lodge No. 17, from 1855 until 1860 and a member of the Navasota Lodge No. 299 from 1867 until 1870.
Unfortunately, for some reason, I have been unable to find a listing for the Ira M. Camp family in the U. S. Federal. Census for 1870.
The Federal Census for 1880, District Four, Emerson District, Navasota, Grimes County, Texas, shows I. M. Camp as Family 393 living in Dwelling 236, and his occupation is listed as a farmer. Only he and his wife are in the family group except for a boarder, C. R. Gibbs and two servants. The family listing is:

I. M. Camp W M 68 Ga. Ga. Ga.
Eliza Camp W F 61 Ga. Ga. Ga.
C.R. Gibbs W F 69 Ga. Ga. Ga.
Up to within a few years of his death, Ira Camp was a very active and influential member of the
Navasota Baptist Church. In his late years, how ever, he affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventists, though he continued his liberal support to many Baptist causes and institutions. In the obituary of his wife, Eliza Camp, 1889, the following is said of Ira M. Camp:
"Brother I. M. Camp, her devoted husband, was baptized at the same time and place that Rev C. VT. Baines, Sr. was baptized. Bro. Camp is known all over the state, known for the good he has done. He is one of those big-hearted men whom we call builders in our Zion. He has donated large sums for the building of churches, schools, seminaries, orphans' homes, etc. Though now 78 years of age he is vigorous and energetic far more industrious than the average young man of this day... and his hand is in every good- word and work.
After the death of his first wife, Ira Malcolm Camp married Mrs. Samantha Eliza Hutton and the last years of his life were passed quietly at Navasota. Ira Malcolm Camp died on 21 Jan 1894 at his home in Navasota and his obituary reads in part
"On Monday, January 21st, at 8:55 p.m. Ira M. Camp passed peacefully awat as a servant who has done his duty well to God and man. At his bedside were his wife, his four surviving children, Mrs. Ira Etta Gibbs of Eagle Pass, Mrs. Josephine Harn, wife of Dr. A. D. Harn of San Antonio, Mrs. Eliza Brown, wife of W. H. Brown and C. C. Camp of Navasota, besides several of his grandchildren.
"His every want had been ministered to and they turned from his bedside with the comforting thought that his mission was fulfilled and he had but answered the summons of his Maker. His illness was of but short duration being conf ined to his bed but eight days, previous to which time he had led a life of constant activity, being up and about and giving business affairs personal attention.
"The funeral took place on Tuesday at 2 p.m. - from the residence and the interment was made at the old family burying ground three miles east of the city where in the large stone vault erected by him forty-four years ago, are buried his first wife and six children, and where by their sides his last remains were tenderly laid."
The Camp Mausoleum, which Ira Camp had built about 1851, is the burial place for many members of the Camp family. For many years it was in a state of neglect, with some of the markers being destroyed and the site growing up in weeds. A few years ago, Melba Camp Byerly, one of the descendants of Ira M. Camp, became concerned about re- storing the family burial place. Under the direction of her husband, Sam L. Byerly, and with the support and cooperation of descendants of Ira M. Camp, as well as the present owner of the land, Robert Wier, the project was undertaken and completed. Today the Camp Cemetery and Mausoleum is enclosed by a cyclone fence, the vault has been repaired and the dates of death of Ira and Eliza Camp have been noted. It is a significant place of historic interest well worth visiting. Besides the burial place of Camp family members, the cemetery is the gravesite of Mrs. Miriam Forrest Luxton, mother of the famed Confederate general General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Eliza Collins Camp, first wife of Ira Malcolm Camp, died of congestion at her home in Navasota on 4 August 1889. Her obituary states:
"She was converted in the fall of 1834 and was baptized by Rev. Thomas Baines. Soon after their marriage, her husband was ordained a deacon, from which time till the day of her death it was Sister Camp's pride and pleasure to meet all the scriptural requirements of a deacon's wife. She was a modest, humble, unassuming Christian and she wielded a sweet influence upon all who knew her. Her house was always the preacher's home; and no doubt that many a minister of the gospel will read this obituary with tearful eyes. At 5:30 p.m., August 5, 1889 she was laid in the rock vault prepared by her husband twenty years ago "

Since 1936, it has been officially listed in the Library of Congress as one of the nation's historical buildings. "Known as the Robert F. Foster home, (i t) was built in 1859 or 1860 by Malcolm Camp for his daughter who was married to Sheriff Jeff Gibbs, the first Republican sheriff of Grimes County. Sheriff and Mrs. Gibbs resided in this home until 1883, when it and 200 acres of land were purchased by Mr. and Mrs. R. B. S. Foster. The property is owned today by Robert F. Wier who has restored it and made it a place of his historic interest."
Of interest, also is the marker mounted at the entrance of the driveway which reads "Early Texas Plantation Home in architectural style of the Atlantic states. Malcolm Camp, wealthy cotton planter, built this structure in 1859, with lumber hauled from East Texas sawmills. High-ceilinged rooms are very large. Formal dining room in sandstone lined cellar was unique, Had detached kitchen. Purchased 1883 by a leading local citizen, R. B. S. Foster (1848—1889). This was the birthplace of his three children Georgia, Robert F., and Nettie Rose. So stable is this locality that home was continuously occupied until 1966 by Fosters or their agents. Preservation is by Robert F. Wier, kinsman."
