Notes for JOHN CAMP: As a young man, John left home to travel toDickson, Fulton Co., Illinois. He was an apprentice to a harness maker. He had asthma and was advised to move west for his health where it was less humid. John married Mary Alavelda Beadle in Haven, Tama Co., Iowa. John and Mary came to Colorado from Iowa in 1861. John homesteaded property where the Reynolds Cattle Co.is located today. The property was not profitable because it lacked water. He finally made a trade; in return for his property, he received a spring wagon worth $75.00. The family moved north to an area called Gwanda. He started a tree claim by planting the required number of trees. John Camp later moved his family to town (Platteville) when son Lewis was about seven or eight. Their home is no longer standing but was located where the current highway passes through town. About 1893, John Camp built the home where Ralph Morgan now lives.
