William, known to his family and friends as Bill, fought in theWar Between the States. He was wounded in the war and told hisgrandchildren often about the silver dollar he had placed in hishead to mend the wound. He was the second son or Abner and MaryCamp. He was a good farmer, a very quiet and lovable man.*Service Records and Dates for William L. Camp: Enlisted May20, 1861, in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia by Captina G. G.Crawfoed for the duration of the war as a private in Company e,10th Georgia Infantry. June 1861. Cmaped near Williamsburg,Birginia. October - December 1861. Camped near Young's Mills,Virginia. Performed extra duty in constructing officer'squarters. February - March 1862. Camped near Lee's Mill,Virginia. Performed extra duty as Acting Commissary Sergeant.Prisoner of war after the Battle of Sharpsburg. Mentioned inBoard of Pensions' record search, but no record found. Admittedto Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Virginia, October 4,1862, with a head wound. Furloughed for 40 days on Ocrober 12,1862. Discharged from Army on March 11, 1863. Paid by S. T.Neal on March 12, 1863. Payment record - For monthly pay, from1 May, 1862 to 30 August, 1862, being 4 months at $11 per month= $44.00, Bounty - $50.00, Misc Clothing - $25.00 - Amount paid$119.00 Encorsed payment on W. L Camp's furlough. Received inRichmond on 13th day of October 1862. *Statement of ServiceReference Slip by Georgia Board of Pensions - was borne as Wm.L. Camp. The records show that W. L. Camp, Private, Company e,10th Georgia Infantry, CSA, enlisted May 20, 1861. On the musterroll dated June 30, 1861, only one of which was borne, he wasreported present, and a regimental return for March, 1862, showshim on extra or daily duty as acting commissary seargeant.(Prisoner of war record found.) Inter records further show himpaid to august 30, 1862. No later records found. CampApplication for Allowance for General Disability - Entered onrecord February 8, 1888 for amount of $215.00 Applicant servedas a Private in Company E, of 10th Georgia Volunteers McLaws'Brigatd; that whilst engaged in such military service, at theBattle of Sharpsburg in the State of Maryland, on the 17th dayof September 1862, he was wounded as follows: "By a minnie ballin the right side of head, thereby causing the skull to press onthe brain, where ________ has been rendered permanently, andpractically incompetnent for the performances of the ordinarymanual vocations of life. The fracture causes me to have fitswhen I get too hot or too cold." Q. W. Cousins MD and T. C.Cannon, MD stated "we find that applicant has been wounded inright side of head. The bone is depressed for two inches inlength, and pressing on the brain causing him to have "Epilepticfits". (Later examinations stated the depression wasapproximately 1/8th of an inch deep.)
